30.07.2018 - Mozilla Hubs - easily create web-based rooms to meet with others within Mixed Reality

"All with no app downloads, walled gardens, or content gatekeepers, and on any device you wish - and most importantly, through open source software that respects your privacy and is built on web standards." https://hubs.mozilla.com/ - An exciting development in open VR, as we approach usable and affordable VR technology at the mainstream level there is a new battle forming for control of the airwaves, as with videocassettes, gaming consoles and even the internet itself, at inception there is an effort to create proprietary solutions to lock consumers into a specific platform.

Today Windows, Oculus, Sony and Google all have their own walled garden approach, however, in parallel there is the development of WebXR and associated tooling such as A-Frame that offers an open source and open access pathway for all users to inspect, modify and create their own VR and AR experiences with consumer level equipment, if storytelling is to develop and mature alongside technology it is crucial that these efforts are supported by creators.

01.07.18 - American Gut: an Open Platform for Citizen Science Microbiome Research (Full PDF)

"Using standardized protocols from the Earth Microbiome Project and sample contributions from over 10,000 citizen-scientists, together with an open research network, we compare human microbiome specimens primarily from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia to one another and to environmental samples"

"We show that a citizen science, self-selected cohort shipping samples through the mail at room temperature recaptures many known microbiome results from clinically collected cohorts and reveals new ones. Of particular interest is integrating n 1 study data with the population data, showing that the extent of microbiome change after events such as surgery can exceed differences between distinct environmental biomes, and the effect of diverse plants in the diet, which we confirm with untargeted metabolomics on hundreds of samples."

"Measurement of neural signals from inexpensive, wireless and dry EEG systems"
The results show that inexpensive, wireless, or dry systems may be suitable for experimental studies using EEG, depending on the research paradigm, and within the constraints imposed by their limited electrode placement and number. http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0967-3334/36/7/1469
"Gaming control using a wearable and wireless EEG-based brain-computer interface device with novel dry foam-based sensors"
The results of the present study indicate that using this portable EEG-based BCI device to conveniently and effectively control the outside world provides an approach for researching rehabilitation engineering. https://jneuroengrehab.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1743-0003-9-5
"Comparison of foam-based and spring-loaded dry EEG electrodes with wet electrodes in resting and moving conditions."
Overall, our results suggest that dry electrodes have a similar signal quality in comparison to wet electrodes during motion and may be more practical for use in mobile and real-time motion applications due to their convenience. In addition, we conclude that as with wet electrodes, post-processing can mitigate motion artifacts in ambulatory EEG acquisition. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26737936

New Flexible Silicone-Based EEG Dry Sensor Material Compositions Exhibiting Improvements in Lifespan, Conductivity, and Reliability
Experimental results show the proposed dry polymer electrodes sensors would not only overcome the drawbacks of wet electrodes but also have good performance in EEG measurements. Since silicone elastomers and silver are both biocompatible substances, the proposed dry polymer electrodes will be a good candidate for EEG measurements in research and clinical study. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5134485/
